Notes: Vienna Family Dental, "Country inn" (method: design from the photographs)
Concept in one line: a late-October afternoon on a leafy Vienna street: an old inn that has looked after the town for years, where every photograph hangs in a painted-wood frame with a brass name plate.
Main decisions
- Type: Cinzel for headings. It's classical capitals, the same Trajan-style letters as the logo's wordmark, so the brand is extended rather than replaced. Spectral for text, with its italic used as the host's voice (ledes, quotes). No Garamond.
- Color, sampled from the photos: painted-wood green from the Vienna front door and the paneling (#1f3b2d, #13261d), claret from the red armchair and the maples (#7c2229, #521519), ink, warm paper, and maple amber only for ornaments, frame lines and brass plates. The logo blue stays in the logo. It isn't the rejected cream, navy and gold.
- Imagery: the library's autumn street is the hero. Real Vienna comes from Commons (the Freeman Store full-bleed, Meadowlark in autumn, the "VIENNA" sign on the W&OD depot, a Vienna front door). The real team and cases are used throughout, plus a few warm stock details (red armchair, wool blanket, wall clock, notebook, pumpkin on a step). All of it is graded to one autumn warmth with
tools/tint.ts wash; the Commons photos are desaturated first. The library's blue paneling texture is duotoned into green paneling (team) and claret paneling (services). - Signature: frames. Each photo sits in a dark painted moulding with a cream mat and an amber hairline, and most have a brass name plate. The team is a portrait hall on green paneling. A small ornament borrows the logo's tapered rules, with a dogwood blossom (Virginia's flower) between them. There's no other label above headings.
- Layout: grounds alternate: photo (hero), plaster, claret paneling, paper, wool photo, paper, green paneling, the Freeman Store photo, paper, claret, the pumpkin photo, footer. Headline panels are framed cards overlapping photos. On the phone, each photo section becomes the photo with its card overlapping the bottom edge, and a sticky Call / Book bar sits at the foot of the screen.
- Words: H1 "Do come in." The headings are "How we keep house", "Every age, under one roof", "Smiles from this chair", "Nervous? Do tell us.", "Dr. Paino, at your service", "Faces you'll come to know", "Our corner of Vienna", "Settling up, simply", "Patients, in their own words" and "We'll keep a chair for you". The practice's slogan appears only as a quoted line under "Never rushed", and 7:30 only under "Early doors".
Photos used
Library (my half): place-01-1 (hero), people-07-1, people-01-1, people-05-1, people-02-1, people-03-1, detail-05-1 (dogwood), texture-01-1 (plaster ground), texture-05-1 (paneling, duotoned green and claret). Library SVGs: illustrations 01, 03 and 06 as icons in the reading list.
Real practice photos: every team portrait (warm-washed slightly, the same for all) and the cases veneers-face, veneers-after, chipped, bridge and makeover-face.

Placeholders
- Fees in the paying ledger:
[Placeholder: typical fees, to confirm with the practice]. - The callback time under the form: "within one working day [confirm]".
- The form has no back end. Roles are shown only where facts.md gives them; Nancy, Jordan, Kathia and Jenefer have name plates only.
With better assets or more time
- A real photo of the practice's own front door and waiting room in autumn light. That would be the hero, and it's the one thing the inn concept is missing.
- A real porcelain or CEREC crown photo for the crowns card. Free stock had none worth using, so the card shows a library lifestyle shot.
- Team portraits reshot in warm light against the paneling color instead of gray mottled paper. The frames make the gray work, but the portraits remain the coolest images on the page.
- Self-hosted, subset WOFF2 fonts; srcset for every image.
The method: where it helped and where it got in the way
- Helped: "write the picture of the place first" gave a test for every pick. Would this hang in that inn in October? That's what killed the spa-style towel and toothbrush shots, eventually. The shot list kept me looking for real Vienna instead of settling for the library alone. The hard rules (≥70% photo first screen, ≥10 photos, ≥3 photo grounds, never two text-only sections in a row) made rhythm easy to check.
- Got in the way / left me guessing:
- The library's people and details are strong but in a "Scandinavian wellness" register. The method says to cull for one look, but my first pass let two of them through because they matched in light rather than in meaning. The reviewer caught it. The guide could say: match the subject to the concept, not just the grade.
stock.ts --placereturned almost nothing. As in earlier rounds, the Commons API (Category:Vienna,_Virginia,Category:Meadowlark_Botanical_Gardens) through curl with pauses was the reliable route. Commons and HDR photos need desaturating before a warm wash, or the wash only makes them orange.- The guide's "headings describe … front-loaded with the topic word" (writing.md) pulls against the direction's gracious host voice and the brief's "said like a person". I followed the voice and kept the topic word in each heading where I could ("Nervous?", "Settling up").
- Dentist-specific stock (crowns, milling) barely exists for free. The guide could suggest a fallback for procedure cards, such as using the real cases or a lifestyle shot of the result.
- Review loop: it helped. Overall stayed at 8 across the three rounds, while photography went 7 → 7 → 8 and booking 8 → 8 → 9. Round 3 said ship, with three small tidy-ups that I made. The points that mattered most:
- the two clip-art service cards breaking the "everything framed" idea;
- the spa-stock photos in "How we keep house";
- misquoting: an ellipsis added where nothing was cut. That's a factual error I'd have shipped.
