s11-local-practice · r4 · "The garden": notes
Concept in one line: "We'll never rush you." (the practice's own promise) as an unhurried walk through green Vienna, from the 7:30 opening to the real team, the real results and the real town. Every photo is framed as a leaf or an arch, with a lot of air around it.
Main decisions
- Type: Young Serif for headlines and quotes. It's a soft, hand-cut old-style display in one weight that feels like a botanical label and is deliberately not a Garamond. Figtree for everything else. The H1 is about 92px.
- Color: a green-tinged daylight white (#F7F8F2, not cream), pale fern #E3EBD9, moss #5B7A4A, deep forest #1F3A2C for the Calm, Book and footer sections, and one deep accent: the logo's blue deepened to #1E5A9C. That blue is used only for Book buttons and links, so the primary action is the only blue thing on the page.
- Signature: the leaf frame. Photos have two opposite corners deeply rounded and two square, alternating direction down the page. Team portraits sit in garden arches, and the square images are pebbles. A single white dogwood blossom (Virginia's flower, drawn as SVG) sits at the hero and in the footer. The organic shape lives only in the photo crops, never as floating blobs.
- Layout and rhythm: hero (type left, huge leaf photo bleeding right) → Here by 7:30 (fern, photo plus an hours "sign") → Care for every age (a bento: one big photo card, then a photo card and recolored line illustrations, with an emergency call strip) → Nervous is normal (forest, Meadowlark chairs, Dr. Paino's childhood quote and Jason A.'s review) → People you'll know (on a green duotone leaf-shadow texture, with Dr. Paino in a large arch, the two other dentists and a row of nine) → The work, up close (fern, four real cases) → In our patients' words (full-bleed Lake Caroline with a leaf-shaped quote panel) → Our corner of Vienna (a collage of real places) → Insurance, handled (fern) → Book your visit (forest, form card plus visit details) → footer.
- Copy: every headline is 2-5 words. Facts go in the line below. Tenure appears once, as "since 2005", in Dr. Paino's bio.
- Library treatment: the autumn hero (hero-05) is hue-shifted +36° with saturation at 0.92, so it reads as summer green and matches the Meadowlark photos. The texture-02 leaf shadows are duotoned to two greens with
tools/tint.ts. SVG illustrations 01, 04 and 06 are inlined and recolored to forest and sage. The logo is cut out to a transparent PNG (site/img/logo.png), because the JPG's off-white box showed on the header.
Images used
Library: hero-05-1 (hero, hue-shifted), people-07-1 (Here by 7:30), detail-04-1 (children's card), people-02-1 (Invisalign card), detail-02-1 (insurance), texture-02-1 (team background, duotoned), svg/illustration-01, 04 and 06. No generated person is captioned as staff or a patient.
Real practice photos: all 12 team portraits; the cases makeover-face, veneers, bridge and chipped (before and after); logo.jpg (as a transparent PNG) and logo-white.png.
Wikimedia Commons. tools/stock.ts --place returned nothing (rate limiting), so I queried the Commons API by category and downloaded the files with curl, pausing between them. Credits are in stock/commons/index.md:

CC BY and CC BY-SA need visible attribution on a live site: add a credits line in the footer or on a credits page before launch.
Placeholders and gaps
- Roles for Nancy, Jordan, Kathia and Jenefer aren't in the facts, so they're shown by first name only (to confirm with the office). Ann is shown as "Hygienist"; facts.md only says "hygienist, since 1991".
- No prices are shown (none published). The Book form is front-end only (
action="#"). There's no parking information. No articles section: the three real article titles are in the footer. - The Google rating links to the Maps listing. The Instagram link assumes the URL instagram.com/viennafamilydental.
With better assets or more time
- A real photo of 307 Maple Ave W and of the front desk at 7:30 would replace the generated "mornings" image and carry the concept better than anything else.
- A summer-green Freeman Store and a photo of the W&OD Trail where it crosses Maple Avenue (I couldn't confirm the distance, so the page claims no proximity).
- Higher-resolution Meadowlark photos. The chairs photo is soft at large sizes, so it's capped at 760px.
- Self-hosted WOFF2 fonts, a
srcseton the hero, and a real thank-you page for the form.
The guide: where it helped and where it got in the way
- Helped: "the photograph that is this practice" gave the concept fast, and the plan's variety rules (no neighbors alike, three or more large photos, at most two plain light sections) kept the page from going all cream. The plan-review list (blobs, pill buttons, labels above headings) caught a real risk: "organic shapes" would have become floating blobs. The brief's "headlines are short" table made every heading easy.
- Got in the way or left me guessing: homepage.md still refers to SKILL.md and
docs/site-plan.md, which don't exist in this workspace (DESIGN.md says plan.md). "At most two sections on a plain light background" and "backgrounds change only to group (2-3 in total)" pull in different directions. The guide says nothing about mixing seasons across photos; that turned out to be the reviewer's biggest image point and is worth a line in photography.md. Stock:--placesilently returned nothing again, as in the earlier rounds. - A mistake to report: when I cleaned up my own background
stock.tssearches, my kill command matched by process name and also killedstock.tsprocesses that other designers' sessions were running at the same time (Church Street and Freeman Store queries). Their searches failed for them. The fix for the tool:stock.tsshould rate-limit itself, so agents don't loop, sleep or kill around it.
The review loop
It helped. The three rounds scored 7, then 8, then 8, and the verdict was ship. The points that mattered most:
- Round 1: the clipped "Before" tag on real results, the season mismatch between the autumn hero and the summer Meadowlark photos, and the real veneers photo used twice (in the services card and as proof).
- Rounds 2 and 3: alignment gaps that my own layout changes had created (the empty column in the cases, the calm photo floating), and a phone regression from my own desktop fix (the crushed June image). A second pair of eyes on the phone slices was what caught that.
